CHAPTER 8
In the beginning of the chapter it's Christmas time. Spence is a part of the newly created 17th Airborne Infantry Division, who were rumored to drop into Germany. As the men settled into their fox holes they reminisced about Christmas memories and they sang Christmas carols. After Spence did his training he was looking forward to go home for 7 days. It would take him at least 2 days back and fourth just to travel. When Spence tried to get a ticket home there was not a seat for a couple of days. Christmas wasn't as bad as he expected as most people were friendly. At the end of the chapter Spence gets some letters from his family, and he got a letter from his sister saying that Luann was engaged to Dennis.

Dieter's company has moved closer to Bastogne and it is now the day after Christmas. Memories of Christmas are brought up and Dieter finds out that Schaefer's son was killed near his hometown, while manning an anti-aircraft gun. A man in Dieter's company starts singing Christmas songs, and Dieter asks Schaeffer to sing one. Schaeffer tells Dieter that they are fighting a war that is already lost, and Dieter gets angry. Dieter tries to hit Schaeffer at the end of the chapter, but Schaeffer stops him by grabbing his wrists.
