Chapter 1. Think of a time your were dared to do something..Was it to impress or to be accpeted..Deiter goes swmming
to impress his peers.
Chapter 2. Recall a time you showed remorse for a teacher. In other words you felt bad about what you said or did...Or
you could write about a mean teacher. This entry references Mrs. Jorgensen, Spence's teacher.
Chapter 3. Promises kept/Promises broken...We have all made promises in our lives. What promises have you kept or broken?
Spence's last promise to his dad is he will not take chances during battle.
Chapter 4. Fear hit me full force. In this chapter Spence has to make a jump. He is afraid but does it anyway. Think of
a time you were afraid of something..Was it real? Made up? Do you have some fears? Have you overcome them?
Chapter 5. Pleasant memories, events you miss. Dieter on pgs. 52-53 recalls his past and he seems homesick..
Chapter 7.Talk about a time when you were denounced/disapproved or put down because of your age or your inexperience.
Or perhaps a time or when you hooked up with a mentor to keep safe, to help you or to guide you around. pg. 92..Schaefer
says You don't know anything. You haven't seen anything....later on he gives Dieter some advice.
Chapter 8. What Spence didn't like was sleeping in a foxhole. Perhaps you have had a bad sleeping experience when camping,
at a friend's or on vacation. It could also be about a scary night. Another thought is I don't like all this sitting around
and waiting This entry could be about a time waitiing
Chapter 9.But this was too much. You can't say that to me..Have you ever been mad like Dieter at someone (Schaefer) who
has confronted you with the truth or told you the truth? Or told you something you didn't want to hear. What was it?...What
was your reaction?...anger, denial, acceptance, thankful, shocked. This journal entry refers to the ending of Ch. 9, when
Schaefer tells Dieter that Germany won't win the war and Dieter swings at him.
Chapter 10. pg. 131..Spence opened cans of cold SPAM, hard biscuits, and fruit coctail frozen solid in his pack. He hated
all of it, but he was hungry...... Write about a time you were really hungry or had to eat food you didn't like...try and
recall the situation and put in as many details as you can.......

pg. 130. Spence wanted so much to get to the war and let everyone know what kind of man he was....but he hadn't thought
enough about what he would be doing when he finally got to the battle...Think of time you anticipated doing something and
how much fun it would be..or how you were looking forward to it/how excitted you were.....but when you arrived or took part
in it, it wasn't what you epected or you weren't sure how you would do...It could be practicing and training for an athletic
event, planning a trip or vacation, a concert or birthday party or church event...
.NIce work. Your are going to get a medal for this, Private Morgan. Perhaps you can write about someone you would like
to give a medal to. Tell why you would give it to this person.
Chapter 12. pg. 171.. What he didn't want was for Schaefer to know that he was struggling. In this chapter Schaefer helps
Dieter battle the frostbite, but Dieter does not want his help. However, Dieter eventually gives in and puts his arms and
body next to the warmth of Schaeffer's chest. Think of a time you needed help or had to ask for help from someone you did
not like or respect. Perhaps you were embarrassed to ask for help...
Chapter 13. Pick one here or do both:
pg. 177...Spence had no time to think, only run..This might refer to a time when you just had to act..no thinking....might
be in sports, might be a time of 1st aid to someone, might be a time you reacted without thinking...it might have got you
into trouble....
or...Some officer, somehwere, had made an absolutely stupid decision to send him into such a mess...So write about a time
someone made a bad choice for you and you were in a JAM.
Chapter 14 pg. 196.. "I hope you'll be ashamed to know you fought for Hitler" can you recall a tilme you were
ashamed of something you did or you witnessed an event like this...
Or....pg. 197..."Maybe you've been duped or misguided"..Talk about a time you were tricked or set up.
Chapter 15
pg. 284 Those guys had walked up that hill, brave as anyone......Spence gains respect for the enemy and admires their
courage...Couple of choices here...Who do you know that is brave or when have you admired an oppnent's skill. OR make your
own journal having something to do with the chapter
Chapter 16 pg. 215.."He was disobeying orders, taking a huge chance, and he didn't feel right about that, but he
had tol do this" Again maybe you have been in a similar situation...if so write about it. OR write your own journal
having something to do with the chapter
Ch. 17. pg. 227...Dieter tried to think about that. But he knew the truth, and he told lit to himself: "I will think
about it all my life." At this point in life ..what will you think about all your life? OR write your own journal having
something to do with the chapter
