CHAPTER 1
Introduces Dieter who is a member of the Hitler Youth. He wants to be like his leader, Hans Keller. In tyring to impress
Hans, Dieter goes in swimming, trying to prove his "toughness" to Dieter and the others. On page 5 some information
on the invasion of Poland is mentioned, putting the setting at September 1, 1939. Dieter's dad is not too happy with what
Hitler is doing. Dieter thinks he will be more of hero than his friend Willi Hoffman. Dieter wants to be a hero and return
with medals
CHAPTER 2
In this chapter Japan had just bombed Pearl Habor. Robert is going to sign up for the force. Spence wants to sign up too
but LuAnn thinks he's too small and too young. Spence says he'd show LuAnn he wasn't a coward.
CHAPTER 3
Now the time is November of 1943 and Spencer's brother has been the Navy for two years and Spence wants to join the paratroopers
at the young age of 17. His dad does not want him to and even thinks Spencer wants to enlist to impress LuAnn Crow-ther or
to show up the Stevens boy.His dad finally gives in but makes Spencer promise to not take a chance and be a hero..Perhaps
some foreshadowing at the end as his sister, Louise, is worried about his safety.
